Rickard--I got this information off the SHOtimes mailing list from Rick
Glass. This is what Rick stated to the list and asked the other members
of the list to help you:

"Someone help this guy.....I already set him straight on the cams not
being a problem.....referred him to AutoZone for an upper gasket set (I
believe it is available there now). But, I really can't help him with
the "knocking, missing noise".

Firstly I too have a 1994 Taurus SHO with an automatic transmission
(referred to as an ATX) with 89K original miles--I bought it brand new
off the show room floor, so I know the car and I know a lot about the
car and how it acts, should act and probably in what area the problems
lie.

Firstly--there is really NO COMPARISON between the Yamaha V-6 and the
Yamaha V-8 as far as reputation problems--similar complaint problems,
etc., okay? They are like apples and oranges in a way. Yes they are
both made by Yamaha, but they are so different--it is like a completely
different engine--so please don't make comparisons between the V-6 and
V-8 and DON'T go on rumors you heard about the V-8 and apply them to the
V-6, okay?? They just don't "compare" like that.

It is VERY COMMON for the V-6 to get oil in the spark plug wells--mine
does and it's engine is EXACTLY the same as yours. I can't afford to
fix it--BUT--it can result in an engine miss--IT SHOULD NOT cause an
engine KNOCK. This is very easy to check--take out one of the spark
plug tubes--rub it with a paper towel and see if any oil comes off. If
not, then take a clean rag--preferably white--not a paper towel as it
can get ripped and parts can stick down in the tube--and use a long
screwdriver and wiggle it around gently and then pull out the rag and
see if there is oil on the rag. Yes, the system is sealed, but the oil
can still seep through. It usually keeps oil from coming from OUTSIDE
the spark plug well--for instance if you were adding oil and spilt
some--BUT nothing in the engine is HERMATICALLY sealed, so things can
seep in and leak.

The engine KNOCK--is a different issue--and is doubtful it is from the
valves or cams--Not impossible, but very unlikely.

Rather than have a "generic Ford dealership" look at it--you are luckily
close enough to a very well respected SHO mechanic--who is even the
contributing editor to the SHO Club's news magazine for the Technical
Section.

His name is Doug Lewis. He owns Ford Performance Specialists of
Georgia, Inc. in Douglasville, GA

His phone number is: 770-949-7191 and his email address is
SHOGUY89@aol.com

Get his advice--call him or better yet, drive over and see his shop and
let him see and listen to your car.

I strongly advise you, since you live in Georgia, to just have "any Ford
dealership", work on your car. At least have Doug "diagnose" the
problems and give you an estimate to fix it. He is "our SHO specialist"
and everyone knows he is the "king" of SHO mechanics.

I hope this helps you out and at least leads you in the right direction
for some answers.

Subject: SHO 94 V6--Do cams need to be welded

June 10, 2004
Dear Sir:

I have a 94 Taurus SHO with 74,000 miles on it. This has the V6
Yamaha SHO engine. I developed a knocking, missing noise on it. The
mechanic at the Ford dealership discovered oil in the spark plug wells.
I found this information on the internet-- Oil in spark plug wells? The
plug well seals are ring seals that seal the well tube to the head and
cam cover. Generally, you buy the whole set: camcover gaskets, plug well
seals, intake manifold gaskets, manifold runner valve seals, etc. ). He
stated that it would be at least a $1500.00 repair. I asked about the
SHO's having camshaft problems in the V8 engine & whether these occur in
the V6 engine. The mechanic acted like
he didn't know anything about it. Does the V6 SHO engine has the
same
problem with the slipping camshaft sprocket as the V8 SHO? Should I let
the local Ford mechanic work on the SHO because of the leaking plug well
seals or tow it to a more experienced SHO mechanic in Georgia or
Tennessee who can fix it as well as weld the camshaft? I don't want to
spend $1500 & have the camshaft damage the engine in a few months.

I would appreciate any recommendation that you could make.

Sincerely,

RG Palfrey
