One thing I learned in the military was to protect
yourself in anyway possible. If some jerk is messing
with my car, and I had something (hockey
stick/bat/lacrosse stick, etc) readily available, I
wouldn't think twice about using it. Besides, it was
dark, he couldn't see if the guy had anything on him.
I was in karate for 6 years, they believed if you had
an advantage while defending yourself, you take it,
same with the military. 

Who's to say the the potential thief doesn't have any
martial arts training or doesn't have a slim jim or a
knife hidden in his jacket? Going out there without
anything in your hands when you could've grabbed
something to defend yourself isn't the greatest idea.

Just my .02. Sorry if I ranted....
