As a former truck driver I would stick with the states route and the suggestion about the skyway. Stay the hell off it at all cost's. I burned up a clutch in a new Freightliner during rush hour and had to limp it into Oak Creek WI for 2 days worth of clutch change. As for the coming into Detroit. your further off avoiding a Michigan border crossing after 9/11 The waits can be up to 3 hours to get in or out and you will need a birth certificate and quite possibly customs paper work to transport the SHO through the country if not plated already. That and last I knew fuel in Canada was about 64 cents a liter. or a little over 2.50 a gallon. But if your heart is set on going through canada I would suggest leaving the country at Sarnia and coming in Port Huron Mi and cutting across the state using 1-69 And I'm not sure if the Ferry is running this time of year or not.

Ha! That reminds me of the time I moved to Alaska, in '92. I drove my '79 Bronco all the way, packed to the gills with my belongings. My friend in Anchorage flew down to Seattle to ride with me. We got to the border crossing, two 20-somethings with a few days beard growth, and the border guard was sure he'd caught a couple of drug traffickers! He had us stopped for 15-20 minutes while he went through the Bronco. Only drugs he found were Vivarin, which he left opened and on the floor. I had a big tub of gorp, and I'm sure he swiped his hand through it "just to make sure". All in all, it was a fun drive, though. Except when I spun off the road in the Yukon (it was October). Almost tipped the Bronco over! Ahhh...memories.

My experience at the borders has frequently been long waits in line, just to
get to the guard who, if you look OK, pretty much sends you through with out
much fanfare.

I'd just stay state-side and go the NY-PA-OH-IN-WI route. Likely quicker
and more help along the way. Your bottle-neck will likely be NW Indiana and
Chicago. Not many ways to avoid problems on 80-94 in Indiana, but the 294
tollway always moves better than 94 through the city and is at most 4 miles
longer, but costs about $2-3.00 for the tools. Do NOT even think of taking
the I-90 Chicago Skyway (at least until December)! Now down to one lane in
either direction. And full of rude SUV drivers!
