It is either turning the engine or not. If it turns it, but doesn't sound right, it
is most likely a starter (mechanical) or cable (electrical) problem. (This makes
the assumption that there is nothing wrong with your engine....I don't think there
is, but something COULD possibly have happened inside.) I had a car that had the
starter come apart inside itself...no visual clues....it would crank the engine very
slowly and unevenly, and sounded terrible. I thought the engine had partially
dropped a valve or had some other internal blockage....it turned out another starter
fixed it.
(That was the engine that prompted the list discussion about cranking one over using
the alternator nut.)

The engine has to crank at least 200 rpm to start. All the engine systems can be
good, but it won't start at less than the proper cranking speed.
