[Shotimes] removing tint film, preserving defroster

I've seen some places have an oil base steamer that helps it come off.
I just had my Gen 1's tint removed and replaced. They tried like hell to
get it off with the steamer but the film had been on there for years. They
finally resorted to the scraper. No more rear defrost....but looks better.

The Plus From Hell will soon be coming out of winter storage. The 5% tint
film has got to come off; it's a cop magnet here.
Any tips for removing film from the rear glass while giving the defroster
the best chance of surviving?
