I think Tim is right on here. The cost of parts will be about the same and, if any leaks develop down the line, the relatives on a budget will thank you for the much cheaper refrigerant available at Wal-Mart. Check out ebay as well for ac condensor and compressors.

If you are planning to do the entire project yourself, shop ebay for a set of a/c gauges and check harbor freight as well. Not the best tools there but they'll do the job. Just be sure to get the gauge set for the 134a refrigerant. There is also a cheap evacuation unit (forgot the actual name) at HF to draw a vacuum through the ac system that gets hooked up to an air compressor. Get the proper compressor that will move the correct psi. Not the max but the average operating psi. You can always rent one for a day at Home Depot.
