A car has "soul" if it makes you feel good, IMO.
My 96 V8 makes me feel good, so I would say it has soul. If
you buy a GTP and it makes you feel good, then IT has soul.
I have driven cars that do nothing for me, even though they
are pretty darn good cars, and even fast than some SHO's.
The current Nissan Altima and Maxima come to mind. They
just don't do anything for me.
I test drove a previous gen 530i and I would say it had
plenty of soul, even though I drove the automatic version.
Sure wish my '96 would downshift with a tap like that
Bimmer did! BUT in almost every other way, the 96 V8 was
the equal to that 2003 530i. At least for my purposes.
A car with a clutch IS special, if for no other reason than
they are fairly rare in today's America. In Europe, they
are everywhere, and an automatic is the exotic thing to have
I suppose to most people.
I get out my '89 or '91 when I really need an attitude
adjustment, but for 95% of my driving, I still get a smile
when I get behind the wheel of my 96 every day.
