Sounds like Dave has it nailed down. The slider pins tend to stick if they are
neglected, and will cause the side of the caliper with the piston to do all the
work. You can't see it happening, because it's on the inside of the rotor. A good
thing to do is pull the rear wheels every 4 or 6 months, and make sure those sliders
are not stuck. If they are, you can take them off and lube them, one at a time,
without disturbing any other part of the brake. There are all kinds of opinions as
to what to lube them with....I just use the newest version of old fashioned front
wheel bearing grease. It's what I have in the garage, and it has been working for
me for years. My slider pins first ate a rotor after the '99 convention in
Atlanta/Gainesville, and I discovered I needed a new rotor the day after I got home
to California.
No problems since then, with a LOT of miles tacked on.
