Must have a black top? Is it vinyl or cloth?
If vinyl, then the following will be a good solution:
I have something you might want to try, it is called Wurth
Rubber Care. It makes that black pebbly plastic on door
handles/roof racks/around windshield wipers look like new.
It is clear, won't harm paint, is GOOD for the plastic and
great for other rubber parts like seals and hoses underhood.
I sell it through my DC CarCare business:

There are other "back to black" type of products, but I have
never found anything that is as good for the original
product or works better.
You will want to use a soft bristle tooth brush to work any
product like this in, and then dry with a cotton towel.
Sometimes you have to dry the brush on the towel and use the
toothbrush again to work the dirty stuff out of the rough
portion of the top.
The toothbrush thing will work for both vinyl and cloth
tops, but for cloth, the Wurth Rubber Care might not be the
solution, I would recommend a general purpose gentle
cleaner. I sell a good one, again by Wurth called Super
Spray all, good for all fabrics, and even cleaning REALLY
dirty vinyl. You could also use something like Simple Green.
With a cloth top, go easy with the toothbrush, you might
slightly tear some of the fibers. Work the brush around
gently in tiny circles, like you are supposed to do when
brushing your teeth! :)
Let me know who any of these work.
