[Shotimes] what is a "smog pump"?

I wonder which engine it is for?  I had an 88 SLO that I put over 400,000
miles on.  It had a 3.0 liter, but just the plain one.  The whole car was
plain Jane.  It did not have a smog pump.  I have never seen one on a Ford
either.
