One place where many of us learned where this applies is when trying
to get service updates, like for all those frequent security patches
that M$ gives away for free.  Many people were using a certain key
that M$ declared illegal even though it worked to install the OS. 
So when you went to their website and tried to apply service pack 1,
it would go through all the motions and eventually fail with the
check against the serial number.
