Thanks Paul for the suggestions. Water pump is less than a month old, done
as part of a front 60k. Hoses and stat likewise. Air in system? hard to be
positive there's none, but this is the first time I've seen this happen; the
stat opens and the temp stabilizes when airtemp is less than 70 and I go for a
ride. No banging-radiator noises from steam flashing, nor has the coolant
level in the reservoir changed since the system was refilled. Partially blocked
rad is certainly possible; it and the fans are the only OEM cooling pieces at
this point, and I was planning to drop a new one in before summer; might need
to be quite a bit before summer at this rate.
How-sum-ever, everyone seems to be focusing on the temp gauge reading and
ignoring the other symptoms of increased under-hood noise and associated smell of
hot electrics (but not "hot engine smell" or coolant). It was the
combination of all three, when the cooling system seemed to have just gone into "high
gear", that has focused my attention on the fan motors.
Can I just ask it real plain, could someone please provide a minimal
explanation of how this two-fan system "upshifts" to increase airflow as-needed. And
if one fan is primary and the other auxiliary, whether the aux fan is on the
driver side or passenger side. If I know how it's supposed to work and which
motor to check first, I can do that and let the list know wassup.
Cheers,
Mark L.

I'd say your radiator is partially blocked, your gage sensor is bad, the
water pump impeller is worn or you have air in your system. Does that cover
most stuff????
