Ahhh... I sort of understand. I have owned more Fords than any other name
plate but that is coincidal due to the fact that that particular model
appealed to me and met my needs and fit within my budget at the time.

I think you are missing my point. I am not stuck on
nameplates either, I like anything that is neat, but if
FoMoCo was only going to do ONE big "performance" sedan, and
that was obvious from the start, then why not make it the
one that appeals to the most people?

The facts are that the Galaxie 500XL outsold the Marauder
about 10 to 1. If you are making cars to sell to the
nostalgia crowd, and that is what they were doing, why not
make one that has the best chance of selling? That would be
the Ford crowd.

Maybe you, Paul and you, Carl, are not stuck on nameplates,
but the vast majority of Car buyers and enthusiasts are.
Otherwise the proliferation of Calvins pissing on (insert
the "other" brand here........) would be a lot less.

Chevy folk hate Pontiac and REALLY hate Mopar/Ford. etc.

Even though Mercury is just a slightly fancier Ford, and
Plymouth and Dodge are just cheaper Chryslers, they each
have their crowd.

If Ford wanted to sell the most nostalgia big cars, they had
ONE choice: Galaxie. I suspect someone that is too young to
remember what actually happened in the 60's convinced the
VP's at ford that "Marauder" is a more modern and tough
sounding name than the rather dated Galaxie name. But I can
guarantee you that a 500XL EXACTLY like the Marauder except
for the CV grill, would have sold four times as many.
