I'm sitting here looking at original shifter lever with the broken button
and I don't really see how you could take it apart and fix it. At the very
least you'd have to remove the leather cover to see if the knob assembly
even comes apart. Also, being that the button broke from normal use when it
was one piece, I'm not sure a glued button would hold up any better. You
might just end up having to repair it again in short order. Your best bet
is to find someone parting out an ATX and buying the shifter knob or buy a
new one if they're still available providing you don't mind spending the
$$$$. The SHOtimes FAQ has a section on replacing the knob assembly.

"The same thing happened to me. I had to replace the entire shifter lever
assembly as the button can't be purchased separately."
This is what several folks have said. Bummer. Now, in looking at this
button, it's all made of black plastic and it looks like at the far end it
had a
half-loop molded as part of it like a big eye of a needle or eyebolt, and
the
plastic is lighter color on the sides where it looks like it broke. My
guess is
that when assembling the shift knob to the shifter, they push the button in
so that loop slips behind the piece that the button controls, and this is
what
holds the button in against spring tension. It's a thin strip and probably
broke from wearing out from being flexed every time the button is pushed in.
It wouldn't seem hard to plastic-cement or heat fuse another strip of
plastic
to replace it. Then the question becomes whether the shift lever/shift knob
assembly can be disassembled and reassembled as it was originally done.
Comments? Experiences?
Cheers,
