My '94 ATX was like that for years, I just got used to carefully placing
that little black button beside the shifter (on the indicator) once the car
was in gear and just picked it up and put it back in there when I needed to
shift....

That's a great theft deterrent....I could park that SHO anywhere, anytime,
and leave it running with windows down, without that little button, that car
ain't going nowhere.
