James,

flying is a pretty scary thing.

So is turning left when the concrete wall is about 8 feet 
high and you are approaching it at full throttle with 
nothing but a little bit of car around you, also loaded with 
fuel.  In one situation you know what the outcome usually is 
(flying is pretty safe),  and in the other, as a novice 
"racer" (ME) the outcome is NOT so much a known quantity.

I have done both (fly and drive an oval) and for scary the 
oval has it hands down.

I am not a NASCAR junkie, I just know beyond any doubt that 
what they do is real racing.  I like other forms better, but 
that doesn't mean I can't enjoy the occasional round race 
(indy?) or respect the drivers.
