Yes it is counter-intuitive.  My guess is that pressure inside the
engine holds the oil in place.  I remember reading this trick years
ago here.  Not being trusting of this fact, I set myself up with
rags and a plastic shield to catch all the oil only to get some
small drips.

Now, I can just make sure the catch pan is underneath the subframe
where the oil will drip from the filter but again not much comes
out.  After the drip slows down, I clean up the starter and subframe
with a rag, get the new filter ready, coat the rubber seal with oil,
fill the filter half way with oil and screw it back on.  Then I move
on to drain the oil from the pan and that's pretty quick.
