[Shotimes] struts- front clunk?

Guys
I have a '93 ATX that I am getting ready to put some struts in. The old struts
probably have 70,000 miles on them, but I am hearing an occasional clunking
noise up in the drivers front at various times while I am driving. Doesn't
really make the noise every time I hit a bump, but the car does not seem to
have much shock absorption. The clunk is unaffected by putting my foot on the
brake. How can I tell if the noise is from the struts, versus a tie rod end??
Or, what else do I have up there that may be causing the problem?
Thanks
Bob
