[Shotimes] snow and ice

Not sure where this came from, (ABS not working below a
certain speed) but every vehicle I have had has had ABS that
works as long as the vehicle is moving and the tires are
slipping.

ABS can extend (make longer) stopping distances quite a bit
in certain situations. For instance in snow, it is helpful
to slide the tires sometimes, and build up a pile of snow in
front, ABS prevents this from happening as quick. On ice
ABS can't improve traction at all, since there effectively
ISN't any traction. Chances are in the example of the BMW,
the car would have hit the wall with or without ABS.

The problem with ABS and the typical driver is that they
don't know how to use it. This is where classes like those
taken by SHO convention attendees comes in handy.

That is why every winter, for the first snowfall, I find a
safe place to test the ABS on all our vehicles and encourage
all of my family and friends to do the same. Stomp that
pedal as hard as you can and keep holding it down is the
only way to use ABS correctly, and most people don't do that.

My best tip for winter driving is that if you find yourself
in a situation where you don't think you will stop on a
slick street, try to move to the side and find some built-up
snow/slush. That has more friction/build-up capability than
the slick well-travelled lane.
