Good catch, Bob. That was done on purpose. George's intentions were/are
good. The idea is that once you know the routine, it should in fact take
about 30 minutes. I'm assuming the time is quoted as the time to pull the
strut out of the car. There is obviously some additional time to apply
the spring compressors and then remove the insert from the strut if that
is the case for you.
Part of the reason for modifying the instructions was to specifically call
out some areas that need special attention. Let's face it, if you need
instructions, that means you probably never did this before. You might
not have the right tools or might not be familiar with the components of
the front-end. Plus as it was in my case, I ran across at least one
oddball situation per side that caused me to stop working and ponder the
next step.
In my first attempt, with all parts in hand except that last mystery
washer which cost me 2 more days, it took 7 days start to finish. This
includes replacing the inserts and reassembly. It also includes time to
do my real job since I worked from home during this period. I spent a lot
of time searching for tools.
So in conclusion, if you don't have to fight rusted-on or frozen hardware,
the removal part can be done relatively quickly. I'm of the opinion now
that lowering the subframe will actually accelerate the overall time and
facilitate the extraction process. The qualifier is important. If you
never replaced the struts in say 12 years, I can easily see a 4x
multiplier in time just to get past all the rust.
