I did not realize this was so common! I had a Corvette that every time I
hooked the cable back up the speedo would work a short time and then hang up
mid scale. I thought it was a bad speedo and finally looked real close and
realized the core inside the cable was a hair too long putting a load
against the speedo head. I pulled the cable core and ground very small
amounts off until the bind was gone and then it worked fine with no noise or
hanging!

> I just had a speedometer restored for one of my other cars. The guy doing
the work called me up and explained what was wrong and how much it was going
to cost to fix. In talking he mentioned that the number one cause of
speedometer problems comes just from what George was talking about. The
cable pushes in on the yoke and ruins the relationship with the magnet
inside. He says it sometimes comes from a cable being installed that is too
long. What he recommended was just what George was talking about and that
is limiting the ability of the cable to push against the yoke inside the
speedometer. The cable is properly seated when the square end engages the
speedometer about halfway, it should not bottom out.
