Hey
Have a few questions:
rings:
I have what I believe are Hastings rings although I am
not sure since they did not come with instructions or
boxes. My machine shop installed the chrome ring on
top as a compression ring and the moly ring in the
middle as the oil control. The moly ring (black) has a
groove that points down. Now I am not saying that he
was incorrect in doing this; he even showed me in his
hastings catalog and I just checked the Hasting's
website as well and this "seems" to be correct.
However the Helm's shows that the OEM rings have a
groove on the top ring (compression) that points up.
>From what I can see, the middle (oil control ring)
does not have a groove..maybe a slight taper but
that's it.
There is a possibilty that these are Perfect Circle
rings as well but I can't find any info on them. This
is something that has to be correct. I have some
printouts from the Hasting's site that I'll take to
the garage with me but I wanted to check here too.
Assembly lube and oil:
Was told to install the bearings dry and only
lubricate the surfaces that mate with the crank with
assembly lube. Was told to clean the cylinder bores
with brake cleaner (bought some chlorinated CRC brand)
and then lightly oil the cylinder bores with 10w30
before installing the pistons. No assembly lube or
excessive oil on the pistons or cylinders. 10W30 on
the rod bolts and main bolts.
Just want to get some opinions before I start this..
sorry about grammar, spelling mistakes, I am being
interrupted constatly..
thanks
Ian
