[Shotimes] OT - Test drove a Subaru Legacy GT today

I could point you to some Subie forums that discuss the issue, but this is
the basic problem.
Unless you have enough power to spin all four tires (which even an Sti or
Evo can't do), something's gotta give on a high-rpm, drop-clutch
start......and what happens is that the clutch becomes the slip-point. Do
enough of these, and the tranny gives out, as I understand.
It appears that the best launch for the WRX, Sti, Legacy GT, etc, is at
5,500, then slip the clutch until you are moving. The "trick" is the "right"
amount of slip to prevent a bog, or lose time from too much slip. There was
a good thread from a guy with a new legacy GT who turned times all over the
map (a high-16 with the 4K clutch drop method!), then he cracked a high 13
when he finally caught it right:

Why is this? Seems like an AWD car would be much easier to launch, just rev
and drop. I've never driven one, but from what I've heard they're
supposedly killer off the line because of AWD...
