Yeah, they are not exactly "performance bikes", well, the new K1200S
is, but it's jus NUTS! BMW decided to take on stuff like the hyabusa
with it. 0-60 in 2.8 seconds. But true to BMW, it is a shaft drive
bike.
BMW bikes claim in the market is to guys who are looking for a rock
solid bike that can be ridden for hundreds of thousands of miles.
There are many bike running around with 300k or more on them. I have
72,000 on my K100 and it still starts right up and runs like a sewing
machine. Oh, one other BMW trait is that they are quiet. Contrary to
popular belief (and due to the doppler effect) loud pipes make no
diffference in front of a bike. Thanks, I'll keep quiet pipes and not
scare the children when I ride past.
Overall BMW bikes are very pleasing to the rider in comfort, doodads,
and best of all brakes. ABS is Standard on almost every new bike.
With corsslinked servo assist thrown in, I would say there are no
better brakes made for a motorcycle that is street driven. period. I
lack the ABS on my old model, but it still has way more brakes than
any of it's competitors. (2 2-piston brembo calipers in front, 1 in
the rear). It still stops really fast. they are not the most
visually appealing bikes to everyone, but some really like the
styling. I like the touring aspect of mine. I can throw a duffel bag
on the back, load up the saddle bags and go camping for a week. All
while never having to oil a chain or adjust a belt. Low
maintnance.... I change the oil about every 5000-7000 miles and just
ride. with 90bhp, it's not a dog either and gets an acceptable 35-40
mpg.
so yes, I like BMW bikes. I also like the SHO. They have almost
nothing to do with each other, except 1) i own 2 SHO's and 1 BMW, 2)
they both take metric fasteners and 3) it takes a special kind of nut
to own one.
