You can be fined for an open container if you have a bag of empty bottles in the back seat that you were taking to the recycling yard.  This is very extreme, but if the cop wants to show their muscle, they can get you on it.  I keep it all in the trunk as well, and anyone that has seen my trunk knows that I put VERY FEW things in it.

For this reason, I put all alcohol that I just bought
in the trunk. If I do get into an accident and the
stuff gets smashed up, how do I prove I wasn't trying
to consume it? What if I get pulled over and the cop
sees my car loaded with alcohol? I'd be subject to a
lot more scrutiny. I keep it in the trunk to avoid
problems..
