Joe,  Don't assume that refrigerant loss is the issue.  See if the AC
compressor clutch is engaging.  It is somewhat common for the gap in the
clutch to increase to a point where the magnetic force can't pull the
clutch in.  The compressor sits right below the alternator.  In a well lit
area, you should be able to see if it is engaging.  If not, you can get
something like a broomhandle to apply slight pressure to the clutch and
see if it pops in, then you should feel the AC blow cold.
