In general you are correct.  There may be more to it though, for instance if
one prong consistently fires more than the others and starts rounding off,
then maybe another prong takes over.  Also, once the air has ionized and the
spark is flowing, can it be larger if there is more than one prong?  With
high energy ignitions these days I'm not sure if it matters that much.  I've
seen plugs from V8 SHO's with a lot of miles on them that look really bad,
but the cars still run well.  Of course if someone did the appropriate tests
to prove one way or another that would sure be interesting information to
see.
