 Ford calls it waste spark ignition. 2 cylinders fired every time. The dead
cylinder has the spark jump from ground to the electrode. The cylinder under
compression has the spark jump from the electrode to ground. The
conventional way. This is why the SHO needs the PP or double platinum plugs.
Otherwise the waste spark cycle will cause short plug life from spark plug
metal erosion on the dead cylinder. Causes the plug gap to widen fast. It's
kind of like having a small EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) in the
combustion chamber. Of course we are all spoiled and now expect spark plugs
to last 100K miles.
