I have used nothing but 87 in all my cars for years. The only time I
put in some premium is when I know I will be very heavily loaded in high
heat, or am racing. A little extra octane doesn't hurt when you are
full throttle a high percentage of the time, usually on hot days. But
other than that, straight 87 works just fine. Some might say even the
little extra premium for racing isn't needed, but it makes me feel
better, and if there is any possible performance downside, I don't care,
I like my pistons better than the .001% power difference if that.
As for prices, I really do believe that in times like this when prices
go up all the time, that stations and chains take advantage and just
raise them till business drops off. Why else to explain that prices in
my area have changed 30 cents some weeks up AND down, when the price of
crude has been pretty consistent, and has been going up all the time.
My wife's horses are starting to look better for short trips, but their
emissions and feed requirements mean I will keep my cars a while longer!
