[Shotimes] Bad Alternator

Well Folks, 
Driving in the rain last night and my battery light came on.  I thought that I'd be able to get home but the lights dimmed, the AC clicked off and next thing you know, I'm dead on the side of the road.  What a bummer.  Well, I am assuming that my alternator has died.  So, what's the general consensus on these things?  Do I buy a new one, have the old one rebuilt?  I checked a few prices and they are listing at like $175.  Is that reasonable?
I'm going to try to jump the battery today.  I'm guessing that I can get enough of a charge to get it home to the garage and my air tools.  It's only about three miles.
