I have used the Battery Tender Jr's for years and never had a battery go
bad since using them. Oh, I know they will eventually have to be
replaced, but keeping the battery at or near it's peak is the key. I
have read several articles about units that can supposedly take a
battery back from near dead (sulphated) but they generally don't work
that well. Start with a good fresh battery, and if you store the car
more than a couple days in a row often, have a Battery Tender Jr.
nearby, and just plug it in. No more battery problems. Also no more
battery acid.
Acid comes from discharged batteries that have to be heavily charged all
the time. If you keep the battery near peak (and letting it discharge
just a few % before bringing it back to peak is best) it won't create
acid around the terminals. (again, assuming you start with a healthy
battery).
These maintainer type units aren't good for charging old batteries, or
bad batteries or bringing back nearly dead batteries on a consistent
basis. they just can't provide enough amps. They are good for
maintaining a healthy battery. If you need a quick charge for a deep
cycle battery, get a bigger heavier duty unit than the one you mention.
