One thing nobody mentioned, related to the energy aspect of daylight saving  
time, but a different parameter than just raw energy usage.
 
When you have everyone getting home and it's already dark, everyone turns  
the lights etc. on as soon as they get home.  If it's still light, people  will 
bring the power load up gradually as it begins to get dark and they start  to 
feel the need.  
 
So if most people are getting home while it's still light, the increased  
load is spread out over a longer period of time instead of having a big spike,  
which means less stress on the grid and less need to keep reserve power  
generation capacity ready to come online quickly.
