A cheap parts-store magnet with a 2' extension also works great. Most stuff
ends up on the subframe, from my experience.

 I have used a new trick for this problem. I have a air nozzle that has a 4'
extension on it. I poke this down into the area where I lost the item and
blow everything clean. About 90% of the time I get the piece I lost.
Sometimes extra stuff too!!
