Ian, when I saw Ron's mention of crud it reminded me that a  while back there 
was a discussion of cleaning this crud out of the clockspring  with some kind 
of solvent so the clockspring many times didn't  have to be replaced.  For 
some reason I didn't have any luck with an  archive search.  Maybe your luck 
will be better or someone with first hand  knowledge will chime in.
