does that mean it's a really difficult job? or just a little moreso than the CV? What does fixing/replacing it involve?

as you did is normal. It's supposed to turn on for a couple of seconds when
you turn the key to Run, to bring up pressure in the system. Don't worry
about it until or unless you hear it becoming louder. Even then you'll
probably have plenty of warning before a fuel pump fails.
I detest the fuel pump on my wife's LX wagon, it's much higher-pitched and
louder than I've ever heard on any other Taurus, but it's been that way for
two years with no fuel problems.
I've done the fuel pump R&R in a couple of SHOs and am about to do it in our
Crown Vic. Much easier in the CV because you don't have to drop the tank.

I drove my car for a while today, and noticed a sound I've never heard from
my car before. It's a high-pitched buzzing from the rear of the car. My
friend said he thinks it's the fuel pump, since he turne the car on just
using the battery and you could hear the pump turn on and off in the back.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
George
