[Shotimes] Oh no ! now they both do it!!

I bought my Optima Redtop sometime in '99 and it is still going strong(knock
on wood). I even had a bad alternator during that time and was getting some
very weird voltages at times. I know there was a supposed re-design or
something along those lines a few years ago, but I'd be willing to try
another one. I know Jim White had a problem with his Optima a few years ago
though. I may try an Odyssey battery next though.
With my luck, since they're predicting the first snow of the season tomorrow
night, my battery will fail.

If you got an Optima, you may have to replace it more often.
Sorry, but there have been NUMEROUS discussions across a few cars lists, and
unless I needed a sealed battery (to maybe put it in the trunk without a
case), I will spend $50 on AutoZone Duralast batteries and be happier (as
I've been).

Ron,
I agree!
I've repeatedly seen MULTIPLE, REALLY WEIRD stuff fixed completely by a new
battery.
Besides, here in Florida anyway, one can't count on a battery for more than
2-3 years tops.
If I was smart, I'd replace them on that interval as PM.
(Unless I got an Optima - Hmmmm...)

Well, the CPS doesn't cause "bucking".
I would also suspect the battery, and/or the battery terminals.

I disagree - not theoretically, only from personal expreience...
I had VIOLENT bucking at speed, intermittant tach loss and starting
problems, etc.
I replaced my cam sensor (which was GLUED on, BTW) and if fixed everything!

I'll agree with Ron, sounds like CPS.
To be sure; while it won't start:
dead tach = CPS (crank)
tach works=CID (cam sensor)
For absoultely sure: read the codes
If you try it and it won't start it will set a code. But you have to read
the code then, before you fire it up and it runs and erases it!
