Lots of guys post on shoforum. It has about 5 pages a day of new posts. I try to read them all everyday and stay up on the hobby. For the most part the car is real popular with the college age crowd. The low initail price coupled with the high performance image is still the draw. Most guys on shoforum that are leaving the hobby cite high maintenance costs as the number 1 factor. You play you pay. You can't beat on any car and expect it not not break. Sometimes it's amazing when I read posts of guys complaining that the tranny failed at 150K and he's mad cause it shoulda lasted longer. For what it's worth, I've said for years that in the cycle of cars the SHO has now entered the beater high performance used car stage. This is where guys purchase it as either their first car or first performance car. It gets maintenance and it gets modded and beat on. Read the kill section on the forum. At this years convention I noticed signs that the SHO is transitioning to the buy it
and fix it up/restore it stage. The guys doing it now are younger and just like the SHO and want to have a nice one. This will last as long as the parts hold out and they are relatively easy to obtain. The last stage is the hard core no expense spared restorations. These will be done by the 20 somethings that own the car now. They are developing an attachment for the car and at some point in their life when they have enough discretionary income they will try to recapture their youth and have the SHO they always wanted but could afford. It will happen as it has with every car since the beginning of the 20th century.
