I was a navigator. In the middle of the ocean, the whole shebang belonged to me. I
also tracked the fuel consumption. One day back in 1982 or so over Wake Island, on
a 4,900 mile leg, I found an error in the fuel figures of the guy whose leg it was
(I was just riding along on that leg), and pointed it out to him. It turned out we
would run out of gas an hour before our destination, the Philippines, and so we
diverted to Wake Island. You cannot ditch a C-5...high wing airplanes explode when
they hit the water (actually, when one of the engines on a wing hits the water and
causes it to spin). The big MAC command post in the sky questioned our decision for
a long time when we advised them of it, so we just "hung up" on them (static, etc),
and went into Wake. When all was said and done, we (me and the aircraft commander,
who was a very good friend of mine) got a pat on the back, and "well done".
That airplane, 68-0226, belongs to ME, folks, and I want my lease money!!
