This really nails it. I do about 8 track days a year. After the first
run I get a few visitors slowly walking by and trying to figure out why
my car was passing them at Watkins. It's not so much the car as really
knowing that track. Ask Mark understands with our "low" horsepower
cars, it is importantant to know where you can turn up the wick and push
the pucker factor.
This cheap car get me more track days, where if I spent all my money on
a faster car (I have had my 91 since new) I would do less days, worry
about hitting the wall and causing damage. I load as much into my cars
as most people can get into a small trailer and usally get asked if I
brought the kitchen sink. For low budget fun and smiles per mile this
car currently suits me. I can tangle with 95% of the cars out there. I
expect those 400+ HP cars to disappear and they should. What do I have to
lose, I am driving a Taurus.
I can drive my car at 9/10s while everyone else only pushes 7/10s in
the expensive hardware. Mark knows I have tried to wad this thing into
a ball at Wakins, Lime Rock, Mid Ohio, Road Atlanta, etc.
I have a great time taking the turd around the track. I have a small
following running the Audi club including some instructors and the
corner workers. They visted and let me know they love watching a $2k
car walk around some $40k cars. Sure it's mostly the driver with
experience and not the car, but still make me feel good.
Would I love to be driving my neighbors 930 track car, sure. If money
was no issue I would be driving something different, but this is what I
have to work with. The wife and kid come first and that limits my wheels.
I still like the head scratching when they look in and see race seats,
rollbar, 6pt harness and the Wilwoods.
This list and the folks I talk to about the car/tracking, keep me saying
one more year....
