George,
That isn't REALLY rust you are seeing. It is a condition known as
"fretting" that occurs when two metal parts work against each other. It
isn't caused by moisture at all and can even happen to lubricated parts. It
IS however, oxidation (like rust) but it just happens to form without the
benefit of moisture like rust does.

You're very welcome.
As for the rust....as long as you can account for when it formed, and be
sure that
the leak problem has been fixed, you are in good shape. I'd definitely try
to get
all of it off the parts in there that I could, since rust will continue
rusting even
though there is no more liquid there to create more.
