Torque and rpm requirements are different for an automatic. 
  To make the car more responsive to American tastes with 
the torque converter in the mix, they needed more low rpm 
torque, and less high rpm power.    Power band is shifted 
down slightly, the bigger engine helps, but they fiddled 
with the cams to go with the new tranny.
