Carl, just to clarify a point in my method.  I recommend 
using a vacuume before and after cleaning, but during the 
cleaning, you use cloths or towels.

Old bath towels are perfect.  They soak up the dirt that is 
loosened by the cleaner, whichever one you choose, and I do 
like the soda based product that Ron mentioned.  I had a 
sample can once, and it worked really well in the house, I 
need to find the company and add it to my product line.

I try not to use a brush because it can tear the fibers and 
lead to the carpet looking old before its time.  A blotting 
or light rubbing with a towel is much easier on the carpet.
