I'm thinking that the way to deal with this is just to drop the whole
subframe out of the car, do the repairs, then hoist the whole thing back
into the car. This car has no AC system, so there's no circuit to
compromise. I'd have to disconnect fuel and coolant lines and a few
electrical connectors, sure.

I just think the tranny and rear cylinder head would be much easier dealt
with out of the car. I could also change the power steering pump while it's
out. (Thanks to RB I have a new one on hand.)

One other consideration: Even if this car is dead, I'd be dropping the
subframe anyway to remove the Quaiffe.

Opinions? If it were your car to fix, would you drop the whole drivetrain?
