[Shotimes] Modifying the EEC-IV stock program parameters

Carl, "chip tuning via USPS" should have died along with a lot of other 20th
century things like the hula hoop, and time has passed it by. You will get
ATX folks that swear the chip makes the car run better because the shifts
are harder, but it doesn't do anything noticeable.
Here is an oft-told story, but from an LPM-chip standpoint. Take two SHOs:
Mallinson's & my '89. Identical setups with basic BOS, except Don has no
chip & the calibrated 77mm MAF, I have the 80mm MAF and LPM. We had
"identical" peak HP of 207 on the dyno. Also (and I believe that Don still
has a copy of my dyno chart somewhere) IIRC his car had a bit more midrange
torque, and mine had a bit more HP after the 207 peak.
Now, if the LPM tweaking did anything beyond controlling the 80mm MAF, it
sure wasn't apparent. I suspect that Don's edge in midrange torque might
have been due to the slightly earlier opening of the secondaries (which
seems to have been proven to be counterproductive on anything but an all-out
motor). All of the added timing, etc, didn't do squat. Only benefit that I
saw was the slightly higher idle running the UDPs. At any rate, if the LPM
had any gains, mine should have shown more versus his car.
These were both good-running '89s, and the power curves matched Vadim's BOS
projections exactly.
As Mark mentioned, when you get to the serious mods (like Josh) and are
beyond the parameters of the stock EEC, then play with it. Otherwise, I
wouldn't waste my time or money.

Subject: [Shotimes] Modifying the EEC-IV stock program parameters
(I can hear Ted's voice as he makes the changes to the program settings
for these.)
Let's do this is list form.
1) adding a little spark down low, and some in the middle.
2) Leaning out the WOT fuel to make a little more power up top
3) maybe slightly adjusting the secondary opening
4) maybe bumping up the rev limiter a few hundred rpm
5) Turn on the fans a bit sooner
I have 4) turned off (stock setting), items 3) and 5) active.
Items 1) and 2) are also active and they most are probably the only
settings of any significance. I don't run my car at WOT that often (well,
maybe a little more than I admit), so really item 1) is probably the
biggest change. I assume that the spark settings are what cause the LPM
to require the higher octane fuel. I also suspect that this change makes
a significant difference in fuel consumption, but I won't know this for
sure until I do some more testing.

Basically, for a stock or bolt-on stage SHO, this is simply adding a little
spark down low, and some in the middle. Leaning out the WOT fuel to make a
little more power up top, maybe slightly adjusting the secondary opening,
maybe bumping up the rev limiter a few hundred rpm (sometimes handy for open
track, no power gained but you can carry a gear a little longer before a
shift) raising the idle maybe if you have UDP's, or cams. Turn on the fans
a bit sooner, etc. None of that will make a bunch of power, but can help
a bit.
