First the good news:  yes you can.  But:  the resistor will suck up 1/3 of
the amps output, and depending on the size of the amp, will need to be rated
accordingly.  You can get power resistors from a lot of places, up to 100
watts, or even more if necessary.  Look for surplus sites.  The resistor
will also raise the effective Qts of the woofer, which may or may not be a
good thing.  It could get real boomy, although in a car its hard to say
without trying it.
