FWIW, the service manual clearly gives the instructions on how to secure the
crank during disasembly and re-assembly. There is a special tool,
#T74P-6375-A, Flywheel Holding Tool, that is specifically for this purpose.
The starter is removed and the tool is installed, engaging a pawl in the
teeth of the flywheel.
My guess is that most Ford dealerships never even knew this tool existed,
much less actually purchased one.
