[Shotimes] Steering play?

I had the same of amount of slack in my steering rack and it annoyed the heck out of me.

One day I looked at the linkage connecting the steering wheel to the rack to see if there was any play in the linkage. There was!

Stick your down where you usually have your feet and look intensely at the linkage, especially the telescopic section, while you move the steering wheel from side to side. See if there are sections of the linkage system that start moving in a "delayed" fashion. If there is, you may have found the problem.

In my case, the telescopic section was the problem. I inserted tiny metal wedges into the telescopic section and hold them in place a hose clamp. I made sure they were not too tight and lubricated them to not completely block the telescopic action.

Does anyone know what this telescopic action is needed for?

Obviously it helps to eliminate any mechanical feedback from the steering rack to the steering wheel. This mean a vibration free steering wheel and a steering wheel through which road imperfections are felt to a lesser degree. Yes? No?
