I know that the diodes can be unsoldered/resoldered. They're pretty much
right out there in the open once you get the regulator off. I know this
because I completely rebuilt my alternator last year... it was an
interesting trip. Getting that regulator off can be a bitch if you don't
have a soldering iron. The brush probably could use replacing anyway if it's
more than like 5 years old...
make sure you have a paper clip handy if you do it yourself.
the regulator can't be repaired internally. get a new one; like 60 bucks
from rock auto.

The SHO has an internal regulator inside the alternator. I am not sure if
this can be repaired or not? The older alternators had the diodes out in the
open and you could unsolder the old and solder in the new after you took the
case apart.. Usually 6 diodes. 3 installed one way and the 3 installed the
other way.
