Pete has a 93 and therefore has a rod shifter.
You may want to check the bolts at the trans that hold
it in as Don suggested. Josh of SHOnut used to have a
delrin rod shifter socket bushing to replace the
factory one. I think that Jose on the forum has an
aluminum ball socket or something else that can
further firm up shifts. Of course his complete trick
short throw will firm it up and be amazing but that's
another story and $300+ later.
Jose also has a transmission boss brace. This is good
insurance to prevent you from ripping the aluminum
boss out of the transmission which can happen,
especially with bad motor mounts.
I think that you mentioned that you also need new
motor mounts. The new ones will also firm up the
shifting a bit. Check out Josh's reinforced mounts or
if you can weld, you can make them yourself with a
length of pipe.
