Yes, but only with better quality speakers. I use "Speaker Place".
1-800-NEW-Foam or 1-800-639-3626. I replaced my home 12" woofer surrounds
and think they came out perfect! The cost is pretty low and if your model is
not in their database they will tell you where to measure your old speaker
so they can make a perfectly fitting surround. Very detailed instructions
and you can call them for help also. Good company. My SHO subwoofer had the
cone torn and was so cheaply made I decided to upgrade. I used the JL Audio
6.5 dia Model 6W0.

 Now I run this with a MTX amp and an aftermarket Sony head unit so of
course it sounds better. But my wife has a stock JBL system and the same JL
Audio unit replacement and it sounds just fine? I think the biggest problem
is the factory head unit has a limited set of controls for the subwoofer.
